ES Additional Languages

Welcome to our Additional Languages website!

In ASW, we believe that language is the key to understanding ourselves, our community, and it is our means of engaging with the world. Everyone in the American School of Warsaw learning community is a language learner. Language is essential to the learning of all subjects, thus all teachers are language teachers. While English is the language of instruction, we encourage the development and preservation of mother tongue and additional languages. Mother Tongue and additional languages support understanding of self and contribute to the academic and social development of learners.

An additional language is a language that is not the language of instruction, and refers to mother tongue language development, foreign language acquisition (French in ES), Polish native language, and English as an Additional Language (which is a priority for the beginning students)

Elementary School Additional Language Team

In grade 1-5, we teach French foreign language or Polish as a Native Language, as an additional language - 3x40min.

This year we have started a play-based program for Pk-K, where students are exposed to the opportunity to learn French or Polish (both foreign and native) - 2x30min. To be involved in Polish program, the student must speak Polish as a primary language at home. Polish must be the student’s mother tongue or the “heritage” language.

From Grade 1 all students are required to take a Polish Culture and Language course where the goal is for students to understand the host culture and what it means to live in Poland. It is thought in Polish and English according to students' language abilities.
